Google Visual Identity

I am not a big fan of the famed Google logo; the colors, shadow and emboss effects are just plain ugly and outdated. However, it is the recent visual direction Google is taking that really caught my attention.

Is it only me, or do all recent Google logos look as if they came straight from Redmond?

First was the Google Chrome and Google Wave logos, featuring four colors suspiciously similar to the ones used in the Windows logo, then the Nexus One “X”, and now the Google Buzz bubble… I understand that Google are aiming to bring down the Redmond giant with Chrome OS, but is there any need to go as far as brawling for the same four colors??

Whether I am missing something, or Google are in serious need to get a visual identity overhaul. Somebody has got to tell them that there more than four colors in the spectrum…

Google LOVES their colors! Everything on their campus is in these colors - hell, they just got four beehives a month or two ago and painted them green, red, blue, and yellow.I’m not arguing that there is confusion with the windows logo, but this is Google branding through and through. Besides, what else have they got to work with? A big G? As you said, the rest of their logo is pretty humdrum.

They might really love their branding, but I think they should think more seriously about differentiating their colors from the ones of their closest competitors. It’s the ABC of visual branding…
